debunking the right-wing propaganda attacks on barack obama

Lets discuss Barack Obama vs Abraham Lincoln- a comparison of a great American president and a great American presidential candidate:

Hello all. As the founder of obamanation, my intent was to put up a social network on the web and leave it alone to see what would happen. I really had no strong preferences one way or another what the topic should be, but figured with today's political climate, obamanation was as good a soap box as any.

With only 15 members so far, I guess it's not doing much. I would have expected some type of conversation to have started by now, especially since all that's left in the race are McCain and Obama.

Nonetheless, it is what it is.

Then out of the blue, I began to think about Lincoln today. No particular reason, just did (that's my Forrest Gump!) Next, I began to wonder about what Lincoln and Obama might talk about if given the chance.

Immediately, I decided this would be a good topic for my first posting. I went to google, then wikipedia, and compiled some interesting (at least I think so) comparisons. As a disclaimer, ALL of the following was referenced from wikipedia. I am trusting in the validity of that source for the material. I am expecting ANYONE who finds and reads this site to correct/continue the conversation as desired.

1) Obama: Born August 4, 1961, Honolulu, Hawaii (Hawaii became a state in 1959- he made it by two years), first presidential candidate born outside continental US
Lincoln: Born February 12, 1809, in Kentucky, first president born outside the original Thirteen Colonies.

2) Obama: Barack Obama, Sr., goat herder of Kenya, Africa and Ann Dunham of Wichita, KS
Linccoln: Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, farmers and settlers via MA, PA, VA, IN and KY

3) Obama: Parents separated and divorced when he was 2
Lincoln: Mother died when he was 9

4) Obama: Remained distant from his father
Lincoln: Remained distant from his father

5) Obama: Mother remarried, and the family moved to Soetoro's home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old. He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade in 1971 until his graduation from high school in 1979. Attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School.
Lincoln: Father remarried, the Lincoln family was forced to make a new start in 1816 by moving to Perry County "partly on account of slavery," and partly because of difficulties with land deeds in Kentucky. Lincoln's formal education consisted of about 18 months of schooling, but he was largely self-educated and an avid reader.

6) Obama: Father was Muslim, mother was atheist. Became a baptized Christian
Lincoln: His family belonged to a Hardshell Baptist church, although Abraham himself never joined their church, or any other church for that matter.

7) Obama: No military experience. Outspoken opponent of the invasion/war in Iraq.
Lincoln: Elected captain of an Illinois militia company drawn from New Salem during the Black Hawk War, but spoke out against the Mexican-American War, which he attributed to President Polk's desire for "military glory" and challenged the President's claims regarding the Texas boundary. Lincoln damaged his political reputation with a speech in which he declared, "God of Heaven has forgotten to defend the weak and innocent, and permitted the strong band of murderers and demons from hell to kill men, women, and children, and lay waste and pillage the land of the just."

8) Obama: Illinois Senate in 1996 at age 35, reelected to the Illinois Senate in 1998, and again in 2002. In 2000, he lost a Democratic primary run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Resigned from the Illinois Senate in November 2004 following his election to the US Senate.
Lincoln: Unsuccessful campaign for the Illinois General Assembly in 1832 at age 23 as a member of the Whig Party. In 1834 at age 25, he won election to the Illinois state legislature. He served four successive terms in the Illinois House of Representatives as a representative from Sangamon County and became a leader of the Illinois Whig party. Lincoln gave up politics for several years and turned his energies to his law practice.

9) Obama: The Senate historian lists Obama as the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history, and the third to have been popularly elected
Lincoln: An outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery in the United States, ending slavery was always a primary goal of the Lincoln administration.

It can be argued that Lincoln helped pave, if not actually built the road, that has taken Obama to where he is today.
